Why and how?

What's the point of yoga practice, asana practice, and how should you approach it? This is my take.

First, what's not the point?...it's not getting into that complex pose. Simply put, I think it's about developing a conscious awareness one's self through mindful movement. Whatever your level of physical fitness, health, flexibility, whatever...taking some time to move, to focus on one's self as you might just move your fingers and toes, and to try to understand what's going, on, what works, what feels good, what feels out of sorts, is the practice of developing awareness of one's physical self. Since we all have a body, this is why we can all do it, and nobody is better at yoga than anyone else, because it is the flash of recognition about one's self that is the success point, not any other postural achievement.  Through practice, as understanding develops of the physical self, the more complex moves help to shine a light more and more on our mechanical workings, and our practice of conscious self-analysis crosses into the development of awareness of other aspects of our self - and this is the point.

So approach it by starting, moving a bit and trying to figure things out. Ideally self-practice, this is where the real magic happens, or work with someone 1-1, build together that understanding, or take a class, and take from that class whatever lessons your draw from your own work there.
